November is celebrated as Local Government and Community Month. As part of the celebrations and as a gesture to promote selfless service towards local and national development as well as empowering unsung heroes within our communities, the Kingston and St. Andrew Corporation (KSAC) will stage its inaugural Civic and Community Awards.
We are all aware that of the extent to which Local Government impacts our lives, because at some point, we all have to interact and do business with a Local Authority; whether it is to seek a building or sub-division permit, butcher, barber or hairdresser’s licences, places of amusement licence or a permit for burial.
The month-long celebration will give us another opportunity to re-dedicate ourselves to the service to which we have been called, and to serve the citizens of Jamaica with excellence.
We also need to reassure each other that despite the difficulties and the challenges, we can rise above them and continue on our mission to build better communities and to make Jamaica the place of choice to live, work, raise families and do business
And so, the KSAC’s Inaugural Civic and Community Awards was recently launched to highlight individuals who have offered selfless service to local and national development, as well as to empower unsung heroes within our communities.
The Awards are being staged under the theme, “Serving People, Empowering Communities.”
We have to pay a special tribute to the Kingston and St. Andrew Corporation, under the distinguished leadership of Her Worship the Mayor of Kingston, Senator Councillor Angela Brown Burke, J.P. for initiating these awards.
The distinguished individuals who are to be honoured have been making tremendous contributions in their communities, and it is indeed important to underscore their unstinting efforts in terms of leadership, organization, service to the elderly, youth development and service to the nation.
They will honour Jamaicans who have made significant contributions in the fields of agriculture, the environment, health, arts and culture, recreation, education, social services, neighbourhood and community improvement, with special awards to Councillors who have served the Municipality for periods of 10-14 years and 15 years and above.
The KSAC has the honour of welcoming His Worship Councillor Kgosientso Ramokgopa, Executive Mayor of the City of Tshwane, South Africa, and members of his team who are visiting with us
During this visit, EM Ramokgopa will further discuss the areas of collaboration identified during Mayor Brown Burke’s May 2013 visit to Tshwane.. EM Ramokgopa will also be exposed to some of Kingston’s projects and initiatives in local economic development with a focus on youth and women in sustainable development.
